Portland Fire Selects Bridget Carleton With The First Pick In WNBA Expansion Draft

The Portland Fire began building its roster Friday by selecting Bridget Carleton from the Minnesota Lynx as the team’s first pick in the WNBA Expansion Draft.

The expansion draft tipped off at 12:30 p.m. An expansion draft allows new teams to quickly establish rosters. This year, the Fire and the Toronto Tempo will build their teams through the process.

“Today was an incredibly exciting day for Portland as we begin the roster construction ahead of the debut season tip-off,” said Fire General Manager Vanja Černivec. “Throughout this process, our priority was finding players who embody effort, selflessness, and a commitment to team success. Each player we selected reflects the culture of what we are building, and the style of play we want the Fire to represent from day one.”

The WNBA Draft will run on April 13. The WNBA has not yet finalized free agency dates.

Training camp is scheduled to start on April 19.

The Portland Fire will play two preseason games: on April 29 at Seattle and on May 3 hosting Los Angeles. The regular season will start on May 9, with the Fire hosting the Chicago Sky.
